Are You Mad is the newest storefront on Carnaby Street, and the concept that’s making recycling visible – and cool. The project comes as an experiment in circularity and creativity, finding inventive ways to give plastic a second life. By collecting high-density polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene from broken hangers, milk bottles, bottle caps, and food crates, Are You Mad are able to turn the single-use materials into over 100 different useful products for sale at the Carnaby Street shop.
In preparation for the launch, the team behind the project has already diverted one tonne of plastic from going to landfills. That waste has instead gone into putting together the impressive space, which is decked out with artwork, display shelves, furniture, decor and other design-led products – all made out of the collected plastic. Now, you can drop by and turn your coffee cup lids, shampoo bottles and takeaway cutlery into the likes of coasters, hair combs, incense holders and fruit bowls all with that signature recycled plastic marbled effect.
And since Are You Mad is a non-profit, shoppers can support their partner, GROW, a charity that works with schools and communities delivering programmes in sustainable food growing and outdoor learning, through their purchases in-store.
