FORMER Oxford United defender Kyran Lofthouse has joined fellow Sky Bet League One side Barnsley.

The 22-year-old came through the U’s academy and made three senior appearances for the club after signing his first professional contract in December 2018.

He left United in July 2021 to join Woking in the Vanarama National League for an undisclosed fee.

Lofthouse had been offered a new deal to stay with the U’s, but instead decided to leave the club.

His time with United included a loan spell with Oxford City in National League South during the 2019/20 season and then a temporary stint with Woking the following campaign.

Lofthouse joins Barnsley on a three-year deal, with a further option in the club’s favour.

He told the club website: “I think with a club like Barnsley, I don’t think there needs much convincing.

“When I heard about the interest, I was really excited and now I just can’t wait to get going.

“I’m still a young player. I’m only 22, so I think there is development and Barnsley has got a reputation of developing younger players from the lower leagues. It was definitely a big factor as well.”

The Tykes were beaten in last season’s League One play-off final, with Josh Windass scoring an extra-time winner for Sheffield Wednesday.
