Clapping, singing and laughter filled Carterton library when it hosted a poetry day.
Library manager Andrew Bayliss and the Poetry Day Team ran an activity-packed day which culminated in a celebration of the talents of the Poetry Competition winners.
Kerry Miller began the day with balloon and parachute Rhyme Time fun followed by Ann O’Hara’s ‘Our Amazing World’ two-metre high close-ups of creatures from around the world which prompted the children’s wonderful ideas about what the creatures might be thinking and saying.
Thesewere captured by children’s poet Juli Frances Taylor to create poems.
In the afternoon, Juli’s own ‘Poetry Play Workshop’ began with children hunting for rhyming words before the library's own tree was then turned into a rhyming tree.

It finished with children of all ages working together to use phrases to build poems.
The final part of the day began with children from Maple Class at St Joseph’s RC Primary reading out their poem about community.
The poetry competition was judged by playwright Alan Pollock, Steve Antony, author of The Queen’s Hat, and Adam Ball from BBC Oxford.
Fey Faces provided free face painting and The Barn Theatre Cirencester gave prizes of theatre tickets, Bert’s books gave book tokens and Cottsway Housing donated £20.
The winners were 5 – 8 years: M Turner; 9 – 12 years Penny Cameron; Adult Serena Cooke.
