OXFORD United haven’t yet discussed Marcus McGuane’s contract scenario with the midfielder, ahead of his deal running out in the summer.

The 25-year-old sees his U’s contract expire this summer, although it is widely understood that the club hold a one-year option, meaning the situation is less pressing than if McGuane was a regular free agent.

McGuane has established himself as a key player for United over the course of the past 12 months or so, and this season, he has scored twice in 40 appearances across all competitions.

Asked about McGuane’s deal, U’s head coach Des Buckingham said: “It’s nothing we’ve spoken directly to Marcus about, as of yet.

“He’s in the starting XI for a reason and it’s important he continues to perform, and if he does that, he’ll put himself in a very strong position.”

McGuane initially joined United on a season-long loan from Nottingham Forest back in August 2020, and he played 21 games before a thigh injury cut short his loan in February 2021.

The U’s then signed McGuane for an undisclosed fee in May 2021, with the midfielder putting pen to paper on a three-year deal, which included the one-year option.

In total, McGuane has played 147 times for United, and has netted on three occasions.
