American fried chicken chain Popeyes is nearly ready to open its Oxford branch and will be giving away free chicken sandwiches for a year to a lucky few.

The restaurant on Queen Street will open on September 17, said the company.

A celebratory 'live New Orleans-style party' will entertain visitors from 11am.

The first 50 customers will get a free chicken sandwich and some merchandise, while the first three people in the queue will win free chicken sandwiches for the next year.

The fried chicken chain, founded in Louisiana, is opening a branch in the city centre as part of a major expansion.

The launch – Popeyes' fifth British site – follows openings in Gateshead, Romford, Chelmsford and Stratford.

The menu will feature Popeyes' signature chicken sandwich, Southern biscuits and gravy and 12-hour marinated chicken.

The chain described its battered food as having a 'shatter crunch' texture due to its crispiness.
