Frustration over lack of a plan for Witney High Street prompted new town councillor to stand

A Conservative candidate has been elected the new town councillor to represent the Witney East ward.

Darren Thomas won the byelection with 552 votes.

Labour candidate Andrew Lyon was second with 421 votes, Green Party candidate Sandra Simpson received 240 votes and Lib Dem Hannah Bailey received 107 votes.

The byelection, which took place on August 25, was prompted by the resignation of Labour's Rosa Bolger.

Turnout was 23.51 per cent.

Madley Park resident Mr Thomas said: "I am so pleased to be elected by the residents of Witney East to be their new Town Councillor.

"A month ago, I hadn't considered standing for election but I was frustrated about the lack of plan for the Witney High Street so I decided to stand for election and help the Conservative team work to make a difference for our lovely town.

"Standing for election is quite an experience but I am now really looking forward to getting stuck in and making a difference for our community.

"Thank you to everyone who voted I really appreciate it."

The Witney East ward was last won by Labour in May 2019 when they beat the Conservatives.

County councillor Liam Walker, deputy chairman political of West Oxfordshire Conservatives, said: "I think it's great that Witney East residents have elected a brilliant guy like Darren to represent them.

"Time and time again when we were knocking on doors, we heard how angry people are with the lack of plan for Witney High Street, the rollout of 20mph roads in Witney and Labour joining forces with the Greens and Liberals in a coalition.

"There is a reason the Conservative Party have ran our local councils for so long and it's time to bring back that common sense to our local councils."

Witney MP Robert Courts congratulated Mr Thomas on Facebook.

He wrote: "I'm sure you will be a strong local voice for Witney East!"

Mr Thomas remarked before the election that Labour – who have been running Witney Town Council for nearly four years – have nothing to show for it other than hiking up council tax to record levels and increasing Town Hall costs.

He said: "The poor financial management at Witney Town Council recently resulted in plans to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee scaled back as the town council had ran out of money.

"Residents were rightly angered at the lack of celebration shown in the town with many asking why the Town Council weren't doing more to celebrate this historic occasion."

He added: "We have Labour councillors teaming up with Lib Dems and Greens to rush through plans for 20mph roads and pushing through the High Street closure without a proper plan and against the views of residents – a common theme with these new coalitions.

"It's time for change and I hope people vote for me to get that."
