Old bullet discovered in Wantage stream clean-up

The annual summer clean-up of a Wantage stream often produced a surprise – and one year the haul included a bullet, possibly from an automatic weapon.

Arthur Crawford, who organised the event, and Louise Roberts, 11, who discovered the bullet, are pictured holding it as other volunteers work behind. The bullet was later handed to police.

Among other debris were marbles, a cigarette lighter, old socks and shoes and dubious pieces of bone.

The group – Andrew Brown, Louise Roberts, Tina Sheppard, Hilary and Timothy Ashcroft, Susan Waight and Paul Davies – spent three afternoons in August 1981 clearing the stream near Clark’s Mill.

They were sponsored to raise money for St John Ambulance.
