A popular science show visits the Mini plant in Cowley next week in an episode entitled Electric Car.

TV mathematics guru Professor Hannah Fry's The Secret Genius of Modern Life (BBC Two), is a documentary series about the seemingly simple everyday objects or ideas that we tend to take for granted, and how clever they really are.

Prof Fry discovers why innovations in meat packing almost derailed the electric car revolution and how a breakthrough in camcorder batteries led to Elon Musk’s electric empire, as well as demonstrating how not to drive a multimillion dollar prototype car of the future.

Workers at the plant were blindsided when BMW announced some electric Mini production would move from Oxford to China last month.

The first electric Mini was built at the city's Cowley plant in 2020. All Minis will be electric by 2030.

BMW said its hatchback and small SUV electric Minis will start being built in China. Its electric Countryman model will be built in Leipzig, Germany.

The Secret Genius of Modern Life (BBC Two) on Thursday December 1 at 8pm.
