OXFORD United’s 4-0 dismantling of Cheltenham Town ended a 17-game winless run just as an unwanted club record lurked on the horizon.
At the end of the 1987/88 season, the U’s went 19 games without a win in all competitions and made it 20 the following campaign when they drew 1-1 at Leeds United after relegation to Division Two.
After a 2-0 win at home to Manchester United in the League Cup, the Yellows failed to win in 19 matches across all competitions.

The 1987/88 campaign also saw the U’s embark on a 26-game winless run in the league.
After Dean Saunders scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win at home to Coventry City on November 7, United failed to win another Division One match that season.

They next tasted three points in the league when they beat Hull City 1-0 at home the following campaign in Division Two – Saunders again scoring the game’s only goal.
It meant United went 26 league games without picking up three points.
This season, the U’s threatened to come close to the 19-game club record for a winless run in all competitions.
After the 2-1 win at home to Ipswich Town on January 21, United then went 17 matches without picking up a victory.
However, the U’s finally returned to winning ways last night as Tyler Goodrham, Kyle Joseph and a Marcus Browne double ensured Liam Manning’s side brushed past Cheltenham at Grenoble Road.
The win was also Manning’s first as United head coach, having overseen five draws and two defeats from his first seven games.
