OXFORDSHIRE’S leading sports clubs have paid tribute to The Queen following her death earlier today.
Buckingham Palace confirmed the UK’s longest-serving monarch passed away ‘peacefully’ at Balmoral this afternoon, aged 96.
The Queen’s death has prompted a wave of mourning and Oxfordshire’s sporting scene has united in tribute.

Oxford United said in a statement: “The thoughts of all at Oxford United are with the Royal Family. May Her Majesty rest in peace.”
Oxford City also shared a tribute, writing: “Everyone at Oxford City FC is saddened to hear of the passing Her Majesty the Queen.
“Out of respect for the Royal family, our social media channels and website will remain silent for a period. May she rest in peace.”
Meanwhile, Banbury United said: “Everyone at Banbury United Football Club is truly saddened to hear of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
“Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this very sad time.”
Tributes flooded in from other sports, too, with the county’s leading rugby club sharing their thoughts.
Thame-based Chinnor said: “All at Chinnor RFC Thame are saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 96.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the whole Royal Family at this difficult time.
“Rest in peace, your Majesty.”
The Oxfordshire Cricket Board wrote: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family during this difficult time. Thank You, Your Majesty, Rest in Peace.”
Oxford City Stars, the city’s ice hockey club, said: “The thoughts of all at Oxford City Stars are with the Royal Family. May Her Majesty rest in peace.”
The BMW PGA Championship suspended play for the rest of Thursday, with Abingdon golfer Eddie Pepperell four-under par after 16 holes of his opening round.
Tournament organisers have said there will be no play tomorrow at Wentworth.
