Oxford United's Under 18s suffered extra time heartbreak as they bowed out of the FA Youth Cup in the third round to Gillingham.
Gillingham were awarded an extra time penalty after centre-half Ibby Bangurah upended forward Joshua Bayliss.
Up stepped Kai Garrett to give The Gills a 2-1 lead and into the round where they will face Sunderland.
The young U’s went 1-0 down after just seven minutes as a free kick from the left bounced off two bodies before Longan Dobbs reacted first to stab the ball past Monty Marriott.
United responded well with Aidan Elliott-Wheeler off target with a header from a fine cross from left-back Richard McIntyre.
Marriott was forced into two good saves to keep it at just 1-0 at halftime and made a couple more parries soon after the break.
A second half equaliser for the U’s after winger Kasway Burton fired a cross into the box and the keeper pushed into the path of Leo Snowden who knocked the ball back into the empty net.
Extra time saw good chances for Took-Oxley and Burton before subsitute Louis Griffiths fired a third chance well over from inside the box.
But eventually it was Gillingham who found the winning goal from the spot on the 100th minute mark.
Richard McIntyre had a late chance with a free-kick to force penalties, but his effort was straight at Tobey Smith.
