OXFORD United Women were knocked out of the National League Cup after a 2-0 defeat away to Hashtag United.

Malika Apindia opened the scoring early on, before Sammy Rowland added a second five minutes after the break.

The opening goal came when Apindia was allowed to rise high and plant a header into the back of the net from a fifth minute corner.

Emma Samways then tested U’s debutant Alice Russell with a volley after 20 minutes.

United had a chance of their own 10 minutes later after a clever move.

Katie Sherwood’s pass found Zoe Barratt down the left, who then picked out a disguised ball into the run of Shelly Provan.

The full back slid in to get her strike off, but it was blocked well by Frankie Angel in the Hashtag goal.

The U’s had a big let off with five minutes of the half to play when Provan sliced her clearance into the air and the ball came off Cecily Wellesley-Smith’s hand from Rowland’s strike.

The referee pointed to the spot but home captain Grace Gillard dragged the ball wide.

Russell then made an excellent save in the dying minutes of the half, tipping a Rowland effort round the post.

Hashtag doubled their lead when Rowland found space in the left of the box and fired across Russell.

United centre back Jaime Gotch flicked a header towards the bottom corner in the 72nd minute but the ball was cleared off the line.
