Oxford United’s Ciaron Brown on Bolton Wanderers striker Dion Charles

May 15, 2024

CIARON Brown is feeling relaxed about coming up against an international colleague in the Sky Bet League One play-off final this weekend.

The Oxford United centre back is set to directly take on Bolton Wanderers striker Dion Charles, with whom he represents Northern Ireland.

After a glut of goals at the beginning of the season, 2024 saw the numbers dry up for Charles, although that wasn’t helped by a knee injury which saw him out of action for two months.

The 28-year-old netted on the final day of the season though, and then grabbed a brace in the Trotters’ 3-1 win at Barnsley in the play-off semi-final first leg.

That took his tally for the campaign to 20, having netted 21 times in his first full season.

Brown said: “He’s a good player and it’s like when you’re coming up against any striker. You’ve probably played against them before, and can understand it.

“I wouldn’t say it gives you an edge or anything like that. It’s just a familiar face.

“He’s going to want to win it, and I’m going to want to win it.”

Brown added: “The game could be totally different from what I expect it to be. It might be a game where I need to win my headers, but it might be a game where it doesn’t even go in the air.

“When the time comes for it, I just hope to have the answers.”
