Pupils at Church Cowley primary school enjoy space session

When it came to school work, children at Church Cowley St James First School in Oxford were on another planet.

Five and six-year-olds at the school in Bartholomew Road had turned their teacher’s store cupboard into a spaceship as part of a national curriculum project.

Hayley Buy and Craig Woods, both six, are seen checking that it is all systems go in the capsule.

The children used junk to build mock computers, dials and switches. School head Christine Lewis said: “One of the attainment targets is that children know all about space and the planets. Doing it like this means the children have fun at the same time.”

Pupils visited the Science Museum and Planetarium in London to add to their new-found knowledge.
