Covent Garden is getting a new South East Asian joint as Sunda Kitchen opens its doors. Taking the place of what was a branch of Wahlburgers, the Vietnamese/Thai/Malaysian restaurant officially launches this Wednesday – with an exciting team behind it. Jamie Younger (The Begging Bowl), Phil Sutton (The Perry Hill Pub) and Adam Papa (Happiness Forgets) have joined forces in creating the casual dining concept, and chef Charles Lee will head up the kitchen (previously of Robata and Jinjuu and has worked with celebrated chefs including Marcus Wareing and Angela Hartnett).
The restaurant gets its name from the Sunda tectonic plate, which joins large stretches of South East Asia, and the region heavily inspires the menu. Expect creative dishes designed to share, such as:
- Beef tomato tiradito with Thai basil, chilli padi & Nuoc Cham ponzu
- Thai style KFC cauliflower with tamarind mayonnaise
- Vietnamese jellyfish salad with pickled fennel & chilli
- Moo ping lemongrass pork belly with pickled chilli & daikon
- Boba Sundae ice cream with lychee boba, mango jelly, miso toffee glaze, Oreo biscuit & meringue
The drinks list will see classic cocktails take on a Sunda twist, with the likes of a Thai Negroni made with lemongrass gin, coconut Campari and sweet vermouth, and a Spicy Mojito with rum, mint, citrus, herbal liqueur, soda and chilli. And their slushies will likely be a hit, with a lychee daiquiri, Vietnamese iced coffee and Sunda Colada among the options.
Sunda Kitchen is making James Street their home for the next four months before heading to a permanent site early next year, which is still TBD – we’ll keep you updated with deets as they come.
