‘Spitting defendant’ sees magistrates’ courtroom closed for clean

A courtroom at Oxford Magistrates’ Court was closed yesterday afternoon – after a defendant spat in the dock.

The Oxford Mail understands that no action – either for criminal damage or contempt of court – was brought against the woman.

HM Courts and Tribunal Service, which runs the Speedwell Street courthouse, confirmed that the incident took place. No spittle got past the Perspex screens of the dock and no members of court staff were struck, we understand.

The courts service made no official comment.

A sign on the door to courtroom two read: “Please can you clean dock two? Especially the glass. Please wear gloves.”
