The A34 was closed for nine hours yesterday after a crash when a lorry overturned across several lanes.

The air ambulance, police, and fire and rescue crews were all called to the incident which happened between Milton Interchange and Marcham Interchange at around 9am.

A Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 8.45am, regarding an overturned lorry on the A34.

"Crews attended from Abingdon and Didcot fire stations, and a heavy rescue vehicle was sent from Kidlington fire station.

"SCAS attended, along with the police."

The northbound carriageway was closed, with a diversion in place, while traffic on the southbound carriageway was held so the air ambulance could land.

There was major disruption for traffic heading between Didcot and Oxford with a diversion through Abingdon quickly congested.

Long queues spread back to the Chilton Interchange with delays also on routes through East Hanney and surrounding roads like Drayton Road, via Sutton Courtenay and Culham.

Traffic also slowed on the opposite southbound carriageway due to debris.

Buses were sent on diversion with some late cancellations and drivers were urged to avoid the area.

The northbound carriageway was originally slated to reopen at 2pm but at 3pm it was reported it would stay closed until 7pm with delays of half an hour on the approach to the closure.
