Drivers urged to ‘avoid Oxford city’ as widespread travel disruption expected

Significant travel disruption is expected across the city today – amid rail strikes and closure of part of the ring road.

Oxfordshire County Council warned people to ‘avoid the city unless absolutely necessary’. Officials were expecting ‘major delays’, they said.

No trains are running from Oxford railway station to London, Birmingham or Didcot Parkway today. It comes as members of the RMT and TSSA unions stage their latest walk-out nationwide over pay and conditions. Services will resume tomorrow.

The A4142 Eastern Bypass road remains shut between Heyford Hill and Littlemore roundabouts, due to works by Thames Water to fix the water main that burst on Tuesday. It is hoped the road will reopen on Sunday.

Extra traffic caused by fans travelling to the Kassam Stadium for Oxford United’s game against Wycombe Wanderers this afternoon is likely to result in more delays around the ring road.
