In video footage taken at the scene the frightened animal could be heard screaming as rescuers attempted to remove it from the water.

A witness to the incident, Kirsty Pugh, told this newspaper that Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service were quickly on the scene and rescued the deer from the river.

“They were incredible and dealt with the situation quickly and efficiently,” she said.

The fawn is now being looked after by Tiggywinkles, a Thames Valley-based wildlife animal hospital, and will be released back into the wild once it is fully recovered.
