JODI Jones is set to be called-up by Malta for their September internationals.

The Maltese Football Association has applied to award the Oxford United winger a passport and the process is expected to be completed this month, according to the Times of Malta.

The 24-year-old is eligible for citizenship through his father.

If the application is successful, Jones is likely to be in the squad for the Nations League match in Estonia on September 23 and the friendly at home to Isreal four days later.

It would rule him out of United’s Sky Bet League One clash with Fleetwood Town on September 24.

Malta manager Devis Mangia and former boss Ray Farrugia have reportedly been keeping tabs on Jones for several years.

The summer signing enjoyed a productive breakthrough season at Coventry City in 2016/17, but his career has been hampered by injuries since then.

The Sky Blues released Jones in May and he spent most of the summer on trial at United, signing a one-year deal with the option of an extra 12 months on the eve of the new League One campaign.

He has made one start and two substitute appearances this term and was earmarked for a loan spell before the end of the transfer window, but the U’s opted to keep him at the club.
