Oxford Mail: A screenshot of John Howell's account as it standsA screenshot of John Howell's account as it stands The Conservative told this newspaper his account was not followed by his constituents, he said: “It was followed by a large, unpleasant group of people who had no manners, did not engage in debate, were abusive and thoroughly unpleasant.

“I have therefore closed the account.

“I shall continue with contacting genuine constituents in the normal way and of discussing issues with them.”

A search on Twitter using Mr Howell’s username reveals a screenshot of a tweet allegedly made by the MP prior to closing his account, taken by a follower.

The tweet reads: “And so, no sooner is the Queen’s coffin below ground than the utterly charmless and downright offensive begin their tirades against the glory we have seen. Goodbye Twitter. No more will I engage with your endless drivel. My Twitter account is closed.”
