A cheerful clattering of bells marked the end of Sunday’s proclamation event.

Pulling one of the six bell ropes in Carfax Tower was Oxford Society of Change Ringers’ Robin Hall.

The bellringer said: “It was a privilege to do so. It’s the first time in our lives we’ve been able to ring for such a thing – and after all the sombre ringing for the Queen over the last few days.

“We also ring for May Morning, which is a similar public event when we know there are thousands of people outside listening.”

The tuneful arrangement played by the six bellringers was Cambridge Surprise Minor, which Mr Hall described as ‘an arrangement of changes which is very well known’.

Across the city, bellringers have had a busy three days since the Queen’s death on Thursday.

On the night news of her death was confirmed, members of the Oxford Society of Change Ringers reached Christ Church’s Tom Tower within 18 minutes of the announcement to begin tolling the college’s seven-tonne bell Great Tom.
